A Toolkit for Working Through Discontentment

What is Discontentment?

In the context of this toolkit, discontentment is the perceived gap between where we are, the Baseline, and where we desire to be, the Desired State. How we feel about this gap, our thoughts and internal dialog about it add to the level of discontentment in a particular area of our life.

Some of the effects of living in a discontented state include…

    Feelings of sadness
    Perpetuates self-defeating thoughts
    Lack of energy
Sleeping too much or not enough
Diminished mental, physical, and spiritual capacity
    Interpersonal relationships suffer
Tend to seek out unhealthy or non-productive distractions
Addictive behaviors, like overeating, drinking, shopping
    Avoidance
    Self-pity

Left untreated these effects can contribute to depression.

How Does the “Toolkit” Help?

The primary goal of this toolkit is to help relieve the discontentment that you are experiencing at this moment. Once you gain some measure of relief from the effects of discontentment you may find that you are in a better state of mind and some measure of inner peace returns. By using this toolkit you may also recognize areas in your life that need to change and begin the process of working toward your Desired State. Each time you work through your discontentment using this toolkit, you can refer to previous toolkit notes to see where you have made progress, and where you remain stuck. This will help to clarify where you may need help in making changes in your life. As time goes on it is my hope that this toolkit will become one of many valuable assets you rely upon to better your life.

Well I feel that it”s based at a root level. Triggers what ever they maybe. Keep us locked in to what we believe is normal.Getting to what makes us respond in our lives and how we live them.Based at the root good or Bad ?So whats really good or bad in terms of self. On A social level good and bad are clearly defined.Within us is a realm of nonunderstanding.Pieces of a puzzle we go on a lifetime trying to put together. So with that said.I feel having the right tools to help us redefine, and help us be a better self on a internal level…. Thank you JOE

So today, it was interesting that another round of discontentment reached its peak. A friend at the gym mentioned that I didn”t have the same spark in my step. I told her that I was just a bit depressed. I was able to admit to her (since I trust her) that I struggle with discontentment. My description of it was something to the effect: “Everything in my life is good. But rather than focus on that I dwell on the things that I don”t have; the things that I think I need to be happy.” I went on to describe to her that the thoughts create a perception that is as persuasive as reality, and that I have to be careful not to act on false perceptions of the mind. It was good therapy to be able to talk to her, and to have her be understanding and safe to talk to.
